The following four lots were the property of Air Vice – Marshal R N Bateson CBE, DFC, DSO, & bar, each accompanied by a signed letter of provenance Air Vice-Marshal R N Bateson CBE DFC DSO and Bar. Robert N Bateson was one of a select few ‘Master Bombers’ during World War 2. He led daring, low level raids into occupied territory seeking out well hidden targets with minimal loss to the local population. ‘Bob’ Bateson joined the RAF in 1936. At the outbreak of WWII he was serving with No 113 Squadron in the Middle East where he had been flying Hawker Hinds. He soon transferred to Egypt where he was based at desert HQ near Heliopolis, having converted to Bristol Blenheim fighter/bombers. In 1941 he earned the DFC for the courage he displayed during many bombing and reconnaissance missions including one where he ran out of fuel at 25,000ft. He managed to glide across the border into Egypt and land safely in the desert. There he was able to obtain enough fuel from a nearby army camp to allow him to take off again and return to base. In 1942 he was given command of No 211 Squadron which was sent to the Far East as reinforcements during the withdrawal from Malaya and Singapore. When they arrived in Java, the squadron started to receive heavy losses from the Japanese occupying forces but Bob managed to safely evacuate his remaining officers and men to Australia. In 1943 he joined No 613 Squadron who had just re-equipped with the de Havilland Mosquito. Within 3 months he was appointed Commanding Officer of 613, where, as leader of No 2 Group, he led low level precision attacks on military targets including the Gestapo Headquarters and the Dutch Population Registry in The Hague as well as the three main Gestapo Headquarters in Denmark. These earned him the nickname ‘Pinpoint’ Bateson for his bombing accuracy, as well as the DSO. The raids required flying through towns at 50ft or less, and there are recorded instances of bombs being dropped from as little as 12ft. These bombs had an 11 second delayed fuse so as not the blow up the aircraft that dropped them. An account from the pilot following ‘Bob’ on one of the Hague missions said “he saw Bob’s stick (of bombs) being delivered straight through the front door of the building”! Shortly after this raid he was presented with the Netherlands Flying Cross. The targets were usually well camouflaged and protected by ground defences but his attacks were always vigorously and accurately pressed home. His courage and determination soon earned him the Bar to his DSO. A 1st hand account of a raid on the Gestapo in Odense makes the point:- “The third and last attack on the Gestapo in Denmark was on the 17th April 1944 when we raided their headquarters at Odense. Bob Bateson with Sismore his navigator again led, Peter and I flying as his No. 2. We had great difficulty in finding the target, a house in a thickly populated area and well camouflaged with netting. We must have been in the target area at least half an hour searching and of course just inviting trouble from German fighters. Happily they never appeared and eventually we found and destroyed our objective. The difficulty we had (in locating it) turned out to be fortunate, for it gave the people in the area time to disperse and not a single Danish life was lost.” After the war, he was instrumental in getting a proper, tarmac runway installed at the famous Battle of Britain fighter station, Duxford and was the first pilot to land on it. When Duxford closed as an RAF base in 1961, he made the last official take off from the same runway in a Meteor T7 jet. From 1958 to 1960 he was ADC to HM the Queen. He retired from the RAF in 1967 as Air Vice-Marshal having spent the last few years as Senior Air Staff Officer, HQ Fighter Command. He died at his home in Devon in 1986. His RAF medals and log books are housed in the RAF Museum at Hendon.
